Have you ever wondered the gold that you are wearing – Is it 24 karat or 22 Karat? Mostly, people wear 22 karat gold as casual jewelry. Would you like to explore more on the purity of gold?

Karat refers to the purity of gold.

24K gold is considered to be pure gold, i.e. 100% gold. 22K consist of some portion alloy mixed with gold. This means, 91.7% of the composition is pure gold and the remaining is alloy in 22K Gold.

Why is this done?

Mainly for jewelry. It is very difficult to make gold jewelry out of 24K gold because of its softness. Hence, alloy is mixed and gold jewelry is often found to be made in 22K gold.

In fact, traditional diamond jewelry is made in 22K gold and lightweight jewelry in 18K gold.

Quality of gold is measured in terms of karat. The more the unit the more the quality. Best quality gold is 24k and lesser is 22, 18 and so no. Karat is the ratio of gold is to other metals used. It is not universally true that the highest quality of gold is always good for everything. So you will have to consider some purposes before buying gold. If it is for investment, then 24 karat is best. If it is for jewelry then lesser quality might not matter because they have no or slight difference in looks and color. Here is the quality of different quality gold guidelines:
24 karat=99.5% gold or 24 parts gold
22 karat=91.7% gold or 22 parts gold 2 parts other metals
18 karat=75.0% gold or 18 parts gold 6 parts other metals
14 karat=58.3% gold or 14 parts gold 10 parts other metals
12 karat=50.0% gold or 12 parts gold 12 parts other metals
10 karat=41.7% gold or 10 parts gold 14 parts other metals

24 karat gold It is called pure gold, sometimes 100% gold. It means that all 24 parts in the gold are pure and doesn’t have any traces of other metals. It has a distinct bright yellow color. There is no higher quality gold than this. This gold is less in density, meaning less weight per volume. So it is soft and pliable, and not suitable for regular forms of jewelry. It is mostly used for coins and bars, electronic uses and medical devices. 24 karat gold
It means that 22 parts out of 24 are pure gold and other 2 parts are metals like silver, zinc, nickel or other alloys. These metals make the texture of gold harder and the jewel durable. However, it is not also good for embedding highly studded jewelry like a diamond.
So you would need a better understanding of what is karat and how it affects price, looks and durability of jewelry, before investing in gold.
Here are some other common terms used to determine the quality of gold.
Fineness: the ratio of gold to other metals used.
Assay: a test that determines metal quality and content.
Bullion: Precious metal in bulk, eg gold bars, considered in mass than value.
Carat: different form karat, 1 carat=100milligrams in North America.
Hallmark: symbol or stamp on a piece of metal certifying standard purity.
Ductile or Ductility: an ability of the metal to deform when using force, Eg ability to stretch into a wire without breaking.
